Context
Data initiatives often produce dashboards that are admired but unused. Educators and local planners needed information that mapped directly to their choices—allocation of resources, safety planning, or lesson design—without requiring deep technical skills or fast connections.
Spatial thinking was valuable but only when expressed in familiar terms and modest visualisations that could load on constrained connections. Many users accessed materials on shared devices or low-end phones.
There was a risk of overwhelming users with indicators that were not actionable. The focus shifted to identifying which decisions were recurring and how data could de-risk or speed those choices.
What we did
Started with the decision first, then designed the data output. Each chart or map was tied to a recurring choice stakeholders already made.
Simplified visualisations and narratives to match local understanding; legends, layers, and categories were pared back.
Provided brief, contextual summaries and checklists alongside visuals so non-technical users could act confidently.
